From the Port to a Thousand Miles Away: Moving Oversized Freight with Precision
Shipment Overview
This project involved the inland transport of wind turbine main shafts, each measuring over 40 feet in length and weighing upwards of 25 tons. The cargo arrived at the Port of Los Angeles and required specialized flatbed transport to a renewable energy construction site in the Midwest.
It started at the Port of Houston, Texas, where a massive flat rack container sat secured and waiting. On it — oversized cargo that wasn’t going anywhere without the right equipment, permits, and careful planning.
The first step was drayage. Our truck rolled into the port, hooked onto the flat rack, and moved it just a few miles to a local warehouse equipped for heavy-lift operations. This wasn’t a standard warehouse stop — it was chosen specifically because it could handle what came next: lifting these huge pieces safely off the flat rack with a crane.
Once in position, the crane operator worked with our crew to carefully unload each section, moving with precision so nothing shifted or sustained damage. On the ground, we prepped the freight for its next ride — blocking, bracing, and securing it for a step deck flatbed trailer that was ready for the challenge.
This wasn’t just any trailer. It was paired with a driver holding all the necessary oversize/over height permits, along with a planned route designed to avoid low bridges, tight turns, and other oversized-load obstacles. Depending on the destination, some runs also require pilot cars and extra clearances to make sure every mile is legal and safe.
With everything ready, the semi pulled away from Houston, bound for its final destination — sometimes to a facility in Chicago, IL; other times to a site in Denver, CO; or even as far as Atlanta, GA, and Minneapolis, MN. Each run can stretch close to 1,000 miles, crossing multiple states and regulatory zones before arriving exactly when and where it’s needed.
From port pickup to heavy-lift transload to a long-haul oversized delivery, every step of this operation had to click perfectly into place. That’s what we do best — moving the loads that others can’t, from the first mile to the last.
