International Transport of a Traditional Armenian Clay Amphora to Burbank, California
Overview
A specialty wine retailer in Burbank required the international transport of a large, hand-crafted Armenian clay amphora (karas). These vessels are traditionally used for natural wine fermentation and are known for being extremely fragile, heavy, and irregularly shaped. The shipment involved export coordination in Armenia, custom crating, LCL ocean freight, and specialized final-mile delivery using liftgate and pallet-jack equipment.

Origin: Hand-Crafted Amphora at an Armenian Winery
The first image shows the amphora in its natural environment — outdoors at a traditional Armenian winery, partially covered in snow. These vessels are produced using ancient clay-firing methods, making every piece unique but also extremely vulnerable to impact or pressure. Their shape makes them impossible to handle like standard freight, requiring a tailored logistics plan from the very beginning.
Step 1: Custom Handling & Packaging at Origin

Stabilization & Internal Support
- To prevent fractures, the amphora was secured onto a steel base, ensuring even weight distribution during transport.

Custom Wooden Frame Construction
The second image shows the amphora braced inside a wooden skeleton frame. This stage involved:
- Cross-beam stabilization
- Shock-absorbing padding along pressure points
- Clearance space around the clay surface to avoid contact
This ensured the amphora could be moved by forklift or pallet jack without direct handling.

Full Export-Grade Crating
The third image shows the completed fully enclosed wooden export crate.
This was built using:
- Reinforced plywood panels
- Internal bracing to prevent shifting
- Bottom pallet runners for forklift access
- Top ventilation gaps to equalize pressure during ocean transit
This crate met international ISPM-15 standards for LCL export shipping.
Step 2: LCL Export & Ocean Freight
Because the amphora’s volume didn’t justify a full container, LCL (Less-than-Container Load) was arranged. This required extra attention because LCL environments expose cargo to more handling. To mitigate this, we coordinated:
- Controlled warehouse handling at origin
- Protected loading zones to avoid stacking pressure
- Real-time monitoring through the deconsolidation process
- Expedited release upon U.S. arrival to limit dwell time
The shipment moved safely through ocean transit into the United States without a single crack or stress fracture.
Step 3: Final-Mile Delivery in Los Angeles
Final delivery required specialized equipment due to the crate’s size and the amphora’s fragility:
- Box truck with a liftgate for safe curbside offloading
- Pallet jack maneuvering through a retail environment
- Coordination with store staff to plan an exact arrival window
- Careful, slow movement to avoid vibration damage
Because of the amphora’s height and weight, it remained within its crate through entry and positioning inside the store to prevent any risk of tipping.
