Residential Delivery & Offloading of Imported Stone Slabs
Project Overview
A customer ordered large stone slabs for a backyard and pool construction project directly from a supplier in China using DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) shipping terms. While the shipment successfully arrived in the United States and was delivered by container truck to the residence, the customer faced a major issue:
There was no equipment on-site to offload the container.
Stone slabs are extremely heavy and fragile, and the container arrived without a dock, forklift, or unloading capability at the residential location. Without proper planning, this situation often results in costly delays, redelivery fees, or expensive equipment rentals.
Cargo Details
Commodity: Stone slabs for backyard and pool landscaping
Packaging included:
- Reinforced wooden slab crates
- Steel support bars within the crates
- Heavy-duty banding and plastic wrap
- Export bracing installed inside the container to prevent movement during ocean transit
These slabs were high weight and high fragility, meaning improper unloading could easily cause breakage.
Challenge
Although the shipment was booked under DDP service, which covers duties and transportation, the consignee was responsible for unloading the container at delivery.
The residence had:
- No loading dock
- No forklift access
- Limited street staging space
Without intervention, the customer would have needed to:
- Rent heavy machinery
- Schedule another delivery attempt
- Pay demurrage or redelivery charges
This could have easily added several thousand dollars in additional costs.
Our Solution
Instead of renting large equipment, we coordinated a professional lumper crew to handle the offloading directly at the residence.
The unloading process included:

Container Inspection
The container was opened and the internal bracing was inspected to confirm the slabs had remained secure during transit.

Removal of Export Bracing
Wood framing installed inside the container was carefully removed to allow access to the crates.
3.
Manual Offloading
The lumper crew systematically removed the stone slab crates using pallet jacks and controlled handling techniques designed for heavy stone materials.
4.
Residential Staging
Each crate was staged safely at the property to allow contractors to later move the slabs into the backyard construction area.
